Day 4: On the Road to Atlanta

We didn't want to spend too much money on our trip.  We're cheap...I mean, frugal.  Yeah, definitely frugal.  That sounds better.

So we brought along a couple cases of water, packed a yeti with cold snacks and a bag with other treats. We even brought our HEB diet cola for Lisa's caffeine addiction.  The only things we have bought on the road is a little bit of ice (thanks to the yeti we don't have to do it too often) and diesel (thanks to the fuel tank we don't have to do that too often either).  It has been nice not buying a soda here or a bag of chips there.  Mark took the time to get all the drinks and snacks together for the trip.  On top of saving money, it has also saved us time.  Not that we are by any means the first people to do this, but I did want to throw that out there for all of y'all reading about our travels.

Yesterday when I met up with my friend, she mentioned there was a buc-cee's in Kentucky on I-75, so we should stop.  Buc-cee's?  In Kentucky?  Of course we'll stop. And we did.  Unfortunately that buc-cee's was in the process of still being built.  Not open and ready for business.  We were bummed, but what do you do?

Onward we went.

Today we're on the road when Mark sees a billboard for buc-cee's.  We start laughing and wondering if this one is open.  We decide we must stop and check it out.  From a distance we can see cars in the parking lot, so we get excited that it's open.  And, even though we don't need diesel, the gas prices are cheaper than other places around, so we decide to fill up. Mark, noticing how clean the gas pumps are, decides this buc-cee's can not have been open for too long.  It all looks so new.

As we are walking into the buc-cee's we are amazed by just how crowded it is and there seems to be tons of hub bub all around.  Then we notice a camera crew.  We ask how long the buc-cee's has been open only to be told, "since this morning".  This is the GRAND OPENING and here we are right in the fat middle of it all.  Mark was even interviewed, and part of his little clip made it onto channel 2 news in Atlanta!

It was fun enough being in a buc-cee's in Georgia, but it was especially fun being there on their opening day. Watching all the people who had never been in a buc-cee's before.  Over hearing some of their conversations.  The people were LOVING what buc-cee's was selling, and we were loving their loving it.

Time to leave and head on into Atlanta.

Lisa decided if we were going to the South, we were going to eat some chicken and waffles.  Being who he is, Mark researched.  So, of course we did not get just any chicken and waffles.  OH NO.  Not us.  We got the chicken wrapped in bacon dipped in waffle batter and deep fried; served with honey, hot sauce and powdered sugar.  With a side of greens.  Now THIS is how you do greens.  These greens were melt in your mouth delicious.  And what I will say about the chicken and waffles is the next time you are in Atlanta you MUST go get you some!  We agreed this was the best meal we have had in a long, long time.

(btw: Mark had a Terrapin, and Lisa had a PEACH, we're in Georgia, bellini.)

I'm not sure about this intersection, but they sure are proud!

Time to get to the game.  We were told that in Atlanta masks would be required at the stadium, so Lisa was ready....and then, almost no one was wearing a mask!! Woo-hoo!

The Yankees were in town and the stadium was crazy crowded.  It was hot and there were so so many people that we actually decided to ditch the game... but not before we collected our bobble heads, and Mark had a moment to remember his dad.

Mark and I, like many, love our ice cream.  So much that we were eating it 3 or 4 times a week.  We finally decided that maybe, just maybe, that was too much ice cream. We made Sunday nights our 'ice cream night'...only last night we didn't see any ice cream places near our hotel.  Tonight we passed one whilst walking from the parking garage into the stadium.  When the heat and the crowd became too much for us in the stadium, we made a beeline for our ice cream. (Salted caramel for her, salted peanut butter for him)

That's a wrap on Day 4;  let's see what God has in store for us tomorrow......
